Liberty life-cover claims are usually paid within 14 to 30 days once the claims team has every supporting document. Funeral cover is usually paid within 48 hours.

Start the claim by phoning 011 408 3700 or emailing claims@liberty.co.za. Liberty will issue a claim number and post or email you the relevant claim form.

Step 1: Notify Liberty of the death

Call 011 408 3700 or email claims@liberty.co.za with the policy number, the deceased's full names and ID number, the date of death and your relationship to the deceased.

The full claims process and claim forms are published at https://www.liberty.co.za/claims/.

Step 2: Submit the claim pack

Send the certified death certificate, the deceased's ID, the BI-1663 (notification of death), the completed claim form and the claimant's ID and proof of bank account.

If the cause of death was unnatural or sudden, expect the assessor to ask for the police case number, the post-mortem report and the inquest finding before paying the claim.

Step 3: Confirm whether the policy pays inside or outside the estate

If a beneficiary was nominated on the policy, the proceeds are paid directly to that beneficiary and do not form part of the estate. They are not subject to executor's fees but may attract estate duty depending on the structure.

If no beneficiary was nominated, or the nominated beneficiary predeceased the policyholder, the proceeds are paid into the estate and the executor distributes them in terms of the will or the Intestate Succession Act.

Step 4: Track the claim with the assessor

Liberty assigns an assessor to each claim. Ask for their direct contact details and use them, not the call centre, for follow-up.

If the assessor asks for additional documents, send them by the means they request (often a secure upload portal) and confirm receipt by email.

    Step 5: Receive payment

Liberty pays approved claims by EFT into the beneficiary's verified bank account. Funeral cover is typically paid within 48 hours; full life cover within 14 to 30 days of the claim being assessable.

Keep the payment advice with your estate paperwork - the executor (or you, if you were the named beneficiary) may need it for SARS at the next tax-return cycle.

    Practical tips

    • Photograph or scan every page of every form before you send it to Liberty. Original death certificates do not always come back.
    • Check the policy schedule for nominated beneficiaries before assuming the proceeds form part of the estate. A nominated payout to a spouse or child is usually paid within weeks; an estate payout takes the full administration period.
    • If the policy is older than 15 years and a parent took it out, the original policyholder may have been a relative who is also deceased. The claim then runs through that estate first - get advice early.

    Frequently asked questions

How long does Liberty take to pay a life insurance claim?

Liberty typically pays funeral cover within 48 hours of receiving a complete claim pack and full life cover within 14 to 30 days. Complex claims (unnatural death, contested beneficiaries) can take longer.

Does the life insurance payout form part of the estate?

Only if no beneficiary was nominated on the policy, or the nominated beneficiary predeceased the policyholder. A live nomination causes the proceeds to be paid directly to the beneficiary outside the estate.

    Are the proceeds taxed?

Life-cover proceeds are not subject to income tax in the beneficiary's hands. They may, however, be deemed property in the deceased's estate for estate-duty purposes - get specific advice if the estate is above the R3.5 million abatement.
